Openers Max Creek, of course, have often been described as sounding
like the Grateful Dead, but at this appearance you couldn’t really say that of them
until near the end. Opening with the lead-off track of their new Relix ablum(sic),
“You Write The Book,” the band displayed the tight, clear sound of a group
that’s played together a long time. They managed to make “The Weight” their
own, no easy task. By the time they concluded with “I Know You Rider,” they
did recall the Dead, but they’d played enough of their own sound to make that
just a footnote to their style.
